What happens to your email address

The short version: if you sign up for Thursday Mornings, I keep your email address so I can send you the letters, and I don't use it for anything else. You can leave with one click at any time.

You don't have to give me anything to read the book

The novel is a free PDF. Downloading it doesn't need an email address, an account or a form. This site doesn't set cookies and doesn't run advertising or tracking scripts.

If you sign up for Thursday Mornings

I keep:

I use these only to send you Thursday Mornings and manage your subscription. Your address isn't sold or added to any other list, including any company's marketing. The service providers described below process it to provide the service.

The legal basis is your consent, which you give by signing up and confirming the email you'll receive. You can take it back whenever you like.

Who handles it

The letters are sent with Buttondown, which stores the list on my behalf as a processor. Its data processing agreement provides for processing in the United States and incorporates the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses for relevant international transfers. Buttondown publishes its list of subprocessors.

Buttondown also processes technical subscription data, including IP addresses, referrer information and subscription timestamps. Email open and click tracking are switched off for Thursday Mornings.

How long I keep it

You receive letters until you unsubscribe. Automatic subscriber cleanup is enabled: Buttondown removes unsubscribed entries from the visible list after seven days. This is a soft deletion, not complete erasure. It retains a record to prevent an old import from accidentally subscribing you again. You can ask me for deletion using the address below; I will handle the request with Buttondown. Buttondown explains its cleanup process here.

Your rights

You can ask to see the information I hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, or simply unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of every letter. If you think I've handled your data wrongly, you can also complain to the data protection authority; in Finland that's the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman.

Who is responsible

Tom Myrvik is a pen name. The person responsible for this list (the data controller) is Tuomas Muurinen, Oulu, Finland. You can reach me at hello@disappearinghero.com, and I'll answer.
